Canada uses postal codes instead of zip codes. A postal code is a six-character alphanumeric code that identifies a specific geographic area and delivery unit within that area.
How postal codes are structured
- The first three characters are the Forward Sortation Area (FSA)
- The last three characters are the Local Delivery Unit (LDU)
- The first character of the FSA identifies the province or territory
- The second character of the FSA identifies the community within the province or territory
- The second character of the FSA is zero for rural postal codes and 1–9 for urban postal codes
